The Importance of Modesty

Modesty is a topic that is not often enough addressed, and when it is, it is not always clearly defined. I interviews a few people to find out what they though of modesty. Let's take a look at what the Bible and modern day people have to  say about it.

Before I begin a special thanks to the people who took the time to let me interview them: Lindsey S. Samuel V. Kimberly V. Michael R.  Madison A. and Katelyn N. They were very helpful!
if you'd like to read the interviews please go here: http://cupcakestolightsabers.blogspot.com/2012/12/modesty-interviews.html

Matthew 5:28 - But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

Exodus 20:14 - Thou shalt not commit adultery

We see lust is the same as adultery. The way someone dresses can cause lust. It is our job to help our brother's an sisters in Christ with their walk. Part of our responsibility is to not create impure thoughts in their minds. Modesty if not only the way we dress, but the way we talk and carry ourselves.

Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

- King James Version

Proverbs 5:5-23 - Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell.

1 Timothy 2:9 - In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
WE are to be humble. There's nothing wrong with looking pretty and getting dressed up, but we should never dress for attention. We are causing our brother's eye to wander, that is a sin.
Girls often think of something as being modest/immodest, or even seductive without  even knowing what guys actually think.
            Here are some examples:
Sleeveless dressed. They are stereotyped as being immodest. After talking to several people about it, it seems they are actually not a big deal.
But did you know that where you're jacket is zipped to makes a difference? It does! A jacket zipped just below the bust can be a stumbling block!
Tank tops are not a stumbling block, as long as they are not too tight or low cut.
Before you go out always check yourself in the mirror and ask 3 things.
           Is this too tight?
           Is this too low?
Will this cause my brother to stumble?
Just because you're modest doesn't mean you can't be fashionable. Yes, dressing modestly is hard in our modern world. Clothes get small and prices higher, but it's worth it. You can look beautiful without show too much skin.
" Keep it simple. If you have to ask yourself if it's  too revealing, then it probably is. Don't accentuate your

boobs or your butt. Accentuate your smile."

Everyone has their own definition of modesty. It is up to everyone to dress themselves in a way that they do not think will hinder the way anyone looks at them.

"Clothing is immodest if it hinders others from looking at your face."

James 1:15 - Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.       Girls, we all like attention, but do we want to get it in a way that will lead to death? If someone likes you for you body, it's wrong and temporary. Wait for someone to like you for your personality. Purity is more important than acceptance.

"I try very hard not to draw attention to my body because that belongs to my future husband. My body is not for anyone else. Don’t advertise it if it’s not for sale. That means guys who aren’t my husband don’t get previews."
To the guys. Obviously, most girls minds don't work like a guys. We do appreciate and nice set of abs or arms, but we usually don't think impure thoughts when we see a guy with slouching pants. That's just kind of gross. Don't try to prove how "bad" you are by wearing pants that are too big. It's unattractive.

If you'd like to read further into this subject this is a good reference I found. It's answers from really guys:

    1. Amen! Thank you for sharing. It really bothers me when people don't think the way they dress matters, or they think that more people wil like them because of the way they dress.
